California Assemblyman Phil Ting earned his pay today at his “Next 10 Budget Town Hall," Golden Gate Park County Fair Building. “Next 10” is interactive – participants “vote” for alternatives shown on a screen, and then results of those votes also appear. Assemblyman Ting also allowed time for questions and comments.
Word had gone out to fiscal conservatives, and some showed up, asking the tough questions and slightly skewing the expected results on the screen.
Imagine if that room were full of people not happy with paying for trains to nowhere or transit villages. Would the results shown on the screen be the same as they were today? The event was certainly not glamorous. No snacks, no champagne. However, it illustrated a point: Showing up is half the battle.
